Question: What is the difference between a Health Coach and a Dietician or Nutritionist?

Answer: Traditional medical professionals play specific individual roles in contributing to an individual’s overall wellness. There are specialists for every physical (and non-physical) health concern you can think of. However, the conventional healthcare system has failed to integrate all of these areas into one. This makes it really difficult and sometimes impossible to effectively create lasting healthy lifestyle transformations. Physicians, nurses, dietitians and other health-care professionals serve crucial functions in the health care system. The problem is they may not have the time or intent to discuss other factors that prevent people from carrying out their well-intentioned recommendations. Nor have they received the proper training on holistic nutrition. The average amount of time spent on nutritional education (in medical school) is 20 minutes. Dieticians and nutritionists specialize in diet and food nutrition ONLY, and typically promote one diet. Health coaches serve a unique function that fills this void in the current health-care system. We believe that one size does NOT fit all. And, Primary Foods- Career, Spirituality, Personal Relationships and Exercise/Activities/Hobbies play an equally important role.

Holistic health coaches are professionals who have a burning passion for wellness and a lively zest for life. The training to become certified is a yearlong program and is powerfully designed to transform the person who chooses to embark on the health coach journey. Once the program is completed, the health coach is certified by the institution offering the training and is encouraged to promote sound, foundational health concepts to people all over the world. The main goal is to support people in achieving permanent health transformations that last a lifetime. Health coaches usually have a strong focus on behavioral choices and mental/emotional health. This combined with the basic understanding of dietary patterns, digestive anatomy and systemic functions, creates a space for providing powerful recommendations.

As my client I will inspire, support and encourage you, as you:

  • Work to achieve and maintain your ideal weight

  • Set and accomplish goals in a way that is empowering and exciting

  • Learn to track your food; understand and reduce your cravings

  • Increase your energy level

  • Learn to love and take care of yourself

  • Increase or decrease your physical activity

  • Learn to listen to your body

  • Learn about new foods and how you can easily prepare them

  • Improve your personal relationships

  • Discover the confidence to create the life you want

  • Learn to add good habits and crowd out bad ones.

Health coaches fulfill an important and distinct role that does not rely on an advanced degree in medicine, nutrition science or dietetics.

As your Holistic Health Coach, I can offer 35 years of life experience, as a wife, mother, and someone who has overcome an autoimmune disorder. Since, I know what it is like to be on the other side of balance, I can relate very closely to a lot of what my clients deal with.

Question: Where did you receive

your education?

Answer:  Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN). It is the world’s largest holistic health coaching school, with over 100 dietary theories taught by the world’s leading health experts. Here is a small sampling of some of the instructors I had the privilege of being taught by:

-David Wolfe -Andrew Weil, MD -Dr. Oz

-Gabrielle Bernstein -Arianna Huffington -Deepak Chopra, MD

Question: How can I benefit from

your education?

Answer:  Your personalized Health Coaching program will radically improve your health and happiness. If you are not satisfied after the initial 6 month program, I will refund your money.

During the program we will explore concerns specific to you and your body. We will also discover the transformational tools you can use for living a healthy and balanced life. Most approaches to nutrition focus on counting calories, restricting carbs, eliminating fats and increasing protein. My coaching program does not consist of creating outdated lists of dietary restrictions or needless comparative contrasts of good and bad foods. Instead, I focus on bio-individuality. This is where we work together to create a balanced, healthy and happy life, completely individual to you and your needs. There is no one-size-fits-all diet! No one diet works for everyone, so I will guide you to find the food and lifestyle choices that best support you exclusively. I will support you in making gradual, lifelong changes that enable you to reach your current and future health goals.

Establishing a coaching relationship with me is right for you if:

  • You feel as though you have tried “everything under the sun”, yet you still feel as though nothing has worked.

  • You want to make positive healthy life changes but you’re not sure where to start

  • You wish you could lose weight without feeling like you’re starving yourself

  • You are confused by all the conflicting health information and diets out there

  • You want to check more off your to-do list if only you had the energy to do it

  • You want to find a fun and rewarding exercise routine that works

  • You feel like at any minute you might just completely lose it from all the stress

  • You are struggling to find your true passion and identity

  • You wish you could feel more comfortable in your own body

  • You succumb to food, alcohol, or drug cravings which cause you to feel out of control

The popular solution to common health issues these days is to isolate conditions and treat local symptoms individually. Medications are often prescribed to alleviate the symptoms of many lifestyle related illnesses (such as obesity, inflammation and diabetes). Separation of the health condition or illness from the whole body and treating it with drugs is what causes imbalance and side effects to occur. My programs involve working with my clients to create a happy, healthy life. This is achieved through a flexible, fun and rewarding approach. I practice a whole body concept to health and wellness, which means that I look at how all areas of your life are connected.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I overeat due to stress?

  • Do I eat when I am not hungry?

  • Do I continually make poor nutritional choices?

  • Do I continually make poor choices in relationships?

  • Do I have trouble following through with commitments?

  • Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent me from exercising?

  • Is my life out of balance, spiritually?

  • Do I have a fulfilling marriage/love life?

  • Is my career fulfilling?

  • How can I become a better parent, partner, employee or friend?

As we work together, we will look at how all parts of your life affect your health as a whole. Although having a coach is a great way to get you on a path to sustaining amazing health, it is not meant to be a used as a permanent arrangement. Relying on health coaching for extended periods of time can be compared to needing a cane then a crutch and eventually walker or wheelchair. Effective health coaching will give you all the tools you need to take your health into your own hands. This enables you to be your own health coach and advocate. I'm your personal advocate for living a healthy and balanced life; full of energy, gratitude, love, and happiness.

Question: What is the difference between a Health Coach, a Nutritionist and a Registered Dietitian (RD)?

Answer: Registered Dieticians (RDs) receive a more scientific approach to nutritional training. For example, they are trained to administer nutritional advice in medical settings and analyze dietary intake. RDs play a different role than health coaches in the health and wellness of a client, and both play an increasingly significant role in the health-care of the future.

Nutritionists help you examine your eating habits and guide you in choosing a healthier lifestyle. They also diagnose certain diseases related to nutrition, discuss preventative maintenance, food/nutrition science, and use nutrient management to enhance response to health conditions. Nutritionists usually work in settings such nursing homes, schools, hospitals, spas, and restaurants.

A health coach is a holistic (whole body) wellness authority and supportive mentor. They have a broad understanding of the principals of good nutrition and have developed tools to apply them to daily life. Health coaches are trained to support clients with their health goals and empower them to make lasting changes in their behavior and lifestyle. Health coaches tackle issues such as weight loss, headaches, chronic fatigue and people in general who don’t have major health conditions, but would like to improve their overall health and well-being. They don’t prescribe medication, or tell clients to stop taking medication. Instead, health coaches recommend simple, drug free approaches to proper nutrition, weight loss, diet and exercise. Holistic health coaching will focus on relationships, hobbies, career, emotions, physical activity and how these aspects of your whole self are related to nutrition. Health coaches do not isolate and treat symptoms nor do they separate any aspects of whole body wellness. They work on bringing physical, mental, emotional and spiritual nutrition into balance in a way that is fun, educational and free of shame, judgment or guilt.

Question: Do you have any religious affiliation?

Answer:  I'm not affiliated with any religion. One of the foundational elements of my coaching is something called Primary Food. Primary Foods are elements that nourish us at a much deeper level than the food we actually eat, including spirituality. For some, this may mean following the tenets of an organized religion. For others, it may mean taking a walk outside and reconnecting to nature. I support my clients in finding an element of spirituality or inspiration in their lives that works for them.

Question: Is your coaching a vegetarian/vegan or raw food approach to nutrition?

Answer:  I encourage a truly holistic approach. Not just eating according to food movements or the most popular food theory at the moment, but noticing each person as a unique individual. This unique approach is called Bioindividuality. It is NOT a one-diet-fits-all approach. I like to empower clients to explore different ways of eating. This freedom will open pathways to create a personalized approach that is appropriate for the individual depending on their age, health and activity level, where they live, personal tastes and preferences.

Question: How much does health

coaching cost?

- Pay Monthly ($150 per month) Total Cost: $900

Answer: We meet two times per month. Each meeting is 50 minutes. In addition to the two meetings, I will offer additional classes, excursions and activities, including but not limited to:

- Farmer’s Market & Local Health Food Store Tours

-  Vegan/Vegetarian Cooking Classes

Question: Do you take health insurance?

Answer: While I do not accept health insurance, health coaching services may be reimbursable through a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA), or may be deductible as a medical expense, in accordance with IRS guidelines.

Question: Do I need a regular Physician

if I am seeing a Health Coach?

Answer: A Health Coach is not a substitute for your Physician. Health Coaches do not diagnose illness, prescribe medications, treat medical conditions or give medical advice. I can, however, work closely with your Physician to ensure you are receiving the best and most comprehensive overall healthcare possible. Even if you have a serious health issue, I can still be a great source of help by assisting you in modifying your lifestyle due to common issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and high cholesterol.
